How to enter Venice: updated rules 2025-2026

The new access system in Venice

Since 2024, Venice has introduced an access contribution to regulate tourist flows and protect the city’s delicate balance. After a trial phase, in 2025 the system came fully into force and it will be confirmed also in 2026, applied only on selected days and within specific time slots.

The aim is twofold: to make the city more livable for residents and to improve the quality of the visitor experience. Entering Venice today therefore requires planning ahead, checking the calendar, costs and booking procedures.

How much does it cost to enter Venice

The cost of the ticket in 2025 depends on when you book:

  • €5 if paid at least 4 days before the chosen date.
  • €10 if paid within the 3 days before the visit.

The ticket is personal, valid for the whole day when the contribution applies, but only between 08:30–16:00.

Those staying at least one night in a hotel or apartment within the Municipality of Venice are exempt, but must still obtain an exemption voucher (often provided directly by the accommodation).

How to book your entry to Venice

Booking is carried out only through the official municipal portals (cda.ve.it or cda.veneziaunica.it).

The procedure is simple:

  1. Select the date of your visit from the calendar.
  2. Enter your personal details.
  3. Pay online if required or request the exemption voucher.
  4. Receive a personal QR code, to be shown at checkpoints.

This code is the document certifying your right to access the historic city, either in case of payment or exemption.

Calendar and when you need to pay

The contribution applies only on the days indicated by the Municipality and only between 08:30 and 16:00.

  • In 2025, there were 54 days subject to the contribution, concentrated on spring and summer weekends and public holidays.
  • In 2026, the system will restart from April 3, with the calendar already published on the official portal.

The ticket is required to access the Historic City, which includes the city center, Giudecca and the island of San Michele. During the 2025 trial phase, it did not apply to the other minor islands (Murano, Burano, Torcello).

Special rules for major events

The calendar is defined year by year by the Municipality and mainly includes high-affluence days such as spring holidays and weekends in April, May, June and July. So far the contribution has not been applied during the Venice Carnival, but it is always advisable to check the official site because dates may change each season.

Events like the Biennale or the Festa del Redentore fall among the high-affluence days when the ticket becomes mandatory.

Who is exempt from the entry ticket

Not all visitors have to pay. The following are exempt from the contribution:

  • Residents in the Municipality of Venice.
  • People born in Venice and residents of the Veneto region.
  • Children under 14.
  • Guests of accommodation facilities in the Municipality of Venice (with voucher issued).
  • Workers and students with premises in the historic city or minor islands.
  • Relatives of residents with a declared invitation.

Some categories do not even need to register (e.g. residents, people born in Venice, children under 14, residents of Veneto): in these cases it is enough to show an ID card or valid document at checkpoints.

Practical tips for visitors

  • Check the official calendar: the ticket is required only on certain days.
  • Book in advance: it saves money (€5 instead of €10).
  • Always keep your QR code: it is personal and must be shown at checkpoints.
  • Organize your transport: the contribution does not include public transport, so buy ACTV tickets or passes separately

The ideal choice: staying in Venice

To experience Venice calmly and without stress, the best solution is to stay overnight in the city. Albergo Marin, just a few steps from Santa Lucia train station and close to the historic heart, is a cozy and practical base. With its family management and strategic location, it is the ideal starting point for those entering Venice with the new rules and wishing to discover the city authentically.
